Dolphin Species
Discover Spinner and Bottlenose Dolphins in their Natural Habitat
Mauritian waters are home to two of the most fascinating dolphin species: the Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris) and the Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops). Both are frequently observed along the west coast of Mauritius, particularly in areas like Tamarin Bay and Black River. Early morning excursions give you the best chance to experience these magnificent creatures up close.
Spinner Dolphins are the playful acrobats of the ocean. Traveling in large pods of dozens to over 100 members, they are famous for their energetic spins and leaps, creating unforgettable moments for observers.
Bottlenose Dolphins are larger, intelligent, and naturally curious. They usually form smaller pods of 2–15 individuals and often approach boats gracefully, offering a unique chance to see these gentle giants in action.
While both species may be seen in the same areas, they often group separately and exhibit distinct behaviors, making every encounter unique.
